The Chatfield Charter Commission was established under Minnesota Statute 410.05. The commission is made up of volunteers from within the community.  State statute requires that the commission can be as few as seven members, with a maximum of fifteen members, each of whom serve four-year terms.

The role of the Charter Commission is as follows:

  • Review the Charter to ensure it remains current, in order to facilitate the governance process
  • Consider petitions that might be submitted, by residents or the City Council
  • Initiate amendments as the Commission sees fit
  • Determine how those amendments should be adopted
  • Operate separately from the municipal government
