Garden Rules and Regulations
- Chatfield Community Garden is open to the public, for an annual fee, from May 15th to October 15th and is subject to the following rules. Planting dates will depend upon the weather!
- The City of Chatfield has the duty of enforcing rules and making decision for the community garden
- Each person intending to use the community garden must apply for a garden plot each year
- Maintaining your garden is your responsibility. If plots are unattended, we will contact you.
- During the garden season (May-October), everyone must maintain their plot(s) and at the end of the growing season, all remaining plant material must be removed by October 15th and left in a pile, and we will pick up. Any items left behind after this date will be forfeited.
- When you no longer want your plot, you must notify City Hall at 507-867-3810. You cannot give your plot to others.
- Stakes that mark garden plot corners and garden plot numbers must be left in place all season.
- Orange or bright colored fencing is not permitted at any of the gardens. Fencing must be neutral colors only.
- Gardeners are responsible for all weeding, fertilizing, cultivating, tilling, soil amendments, and watering, etc. beyond the initial tilling/fertilizing which will be done by the city.
- Garden plots are used for growing vegetables and flowers. Growing shrubs and trees is not allowed in plots.
- All perennial plant material, structures, wire cages, etc. must be removed at the conclusion of the growing season.
- Since plots are close together, gardeners should keep borders free from weeds or other material that may impact neighboring plots.
- Tall plants (such as corn, sunflowers, or tall trellised plants) that cast shade should be planted where they will not impact adjoining gardens.
- Because of the risk of wind drift to adjacent plots, weed killer spray is not allowed.
- Covering your plot with straw or mulch as an excellent method of weed control and water conservation is encouraged.
- Dogs and pets are not allowed in the garden and must be leashed and closely supervised. You are responsible for cleaning up after your pet.
- Containers of standing water should be avoided because they are breeding grounds for mosquitos.
- Closely supervise your children and help them learn respect for gardening and boundaries.
